As Threads of Kinship Bloom

Multimedia Installation with Heidi Piironen
Rapakivi Soundings, Villa Lil Kallvik, Vuosaari,
28 - 29. May 2025

A cascade of translucent paper panels descends from the ceiling like drifting tides, each sheet inscribed with interwoven fragments from five voices: an English rendering of Anni Swan’s “Aaltojen salaisuus,” Helen Henderson’s “The Maiden Who Rose from the Sea,” Alexia Coville’s “As Tides of Kinship Bloom,” and scientific vignettes on Baltic Sea fauna. Projected across this floating tapestry, shifting images of algae and open water animate the texts, evoking the ceaseless motion of currents and stories. Inspired by Astrida Neimanis’s notion that “we are all bodies of water,” the installation invites us to dissolve rigid metaphors of the self. We become eddies in an oceanic circulation, porous to one another and to the more-than-human world.

What does it mean to be anchored in perpetual flux? How do we accept toxicity as part of our ecological and emotional landscapes? Can embracing fluidity—and the wounds it carries—teach us to recognize multispecies kinship and collective care? In this space, wind and water move through us; our touch resonates back; and the line between self and other softens into shimmering layers of surface and depth.
