In the context of the Vicca Gradshow Islands/Currents at HIAP, Suomenlinna I presented The Archipelagic Self as a hand-bound artist book alongside 3 Pinna nobilis shells, rocks, and sand from Evia, Greece. Through the olfactory installation of the pinnae and the sand, the audience is immersed in the materiality of the work. By accompanying the written word, the olfactory and tactile qualities activate embodied experience and memory. The work emerges as an archipelago of matter and meaning.
